ألَم تَرَ أنّ الدهر يَعثُرُ بالفتى
ولاand not يستطيعُcan المرءُa person صَرفَto avert المقادِرِthe decrees of fate
ولا يستطيعُ المرءُ صَرفَ المقادِرِ
Have you not seen that time trips a young man,
Do you not see how fate trips up the youth,
and a man cannot avert the decrees of fate?
And one cannot divert what is destined?
صَبرتُI endured فلمso did not أجزَعlose heart ولمand not أكُwas I طائعاًsubmissive

لحادثِto a calamity دَهرٍof time فيin الحكومةِjudgment جائرِunjust
لحادثِ دَهرٍ في الحكومةِ جائرِ
I endured and did not despair, nor did I yield
I remained patient, neither panicking nor obedient,
to a stroke of time unjust in its judgment.
To the injustice of a fateful moment in authority.
وإنّيand indeed I لذوsurely possessed of صَبرٍpatience وقدthough already ماتَhave died إخوَتيmy brothers

ولستُ عن الصهباءِ يوماً بصابرِ
And I am indeed patient, though my brothers have died,
And yet I am one of patience, though my brothers died,
yet I cannot abstain from tawny wine for even a day.
And I have never shied from spears a single day.

The Commander of the Faithful has struck her dead,
The Commander of the Faithful struck them down with his sword,
so her friends weep around the winepresses.
And their bereaved weep around the presses.
