Have you not asked the horsemen of Sulaym
Did you not ask the horsemen about Sulaym
about Nadla, wronged and resolute?
Ibn Naḍla while he was dejected and downcast?
رأوهthey saw him فازso they— دَروه—scorned him وهوthough he was خِرقٌgallant
وينفعُand benefits أهلَهُhis people الرجلُthe man القبيحُugly
They saw him and scorned him, though he was gallant;
They saw him charge ahead while he was tattered,
yet an ugly man can serve his people.
And the ugly man benefits his family.
فلمso did not يخشواthey fear مَصالتَهhis onslaught عليهمupon them
وتحتand beneath الرغوةِthe froth اللّبَنُthe milk الصريحُpure; unmixed
So they did not fear his onslaught upon them,
So they did not fear his prayers against them,
though beneath the froth lies pure milk.
For beneath the foam is milk that is pure.
فكرَّthen he charged back عليهمُagainst them بالسيفwith the sword صَلتاًunsheathed
كماas عضَّbit الشَّباthe sharp points الفرسُthe horse الجموعُheadstrong
Then he charged back at them, sword unsheathed,
He unleashed upon them with his sword a prayer
as a headstrong horse bites the sharp points.
As the young horse bites the gathered crowds.
فأطلقَso he loosed غُلَّthe shackle صاحبهof his companion وأردىand struck down
جريحاًa wounded man منهمُamong them ونجاand escaped جريحُa wounded man
He loosed his companion’s shackle and struck down
So he freed his companion from his shackles
a wounded man among them; and a wounded man escaped.
And wounded some while escaping, wounded.
