    وسائلي القومَ عن ديني وَعن خُلُقي

    Do not ask people about my wealth and its abundance;

    Ask the people instead about my faith and my character.

    The people know well that we are among their nobles,

    When the terrified coward's gaze rises high.

    I give the spearhead its gift on the morning of terror,

    And give the spear's upper shaft its fill of clotted blood.

    And from the side I inflict a gaping wound,

    That drives out the probes with frothing, overflowing blood.

    وإن ظُلِمتُ شديدُ الحِقدِ والحَنَقِ

    I renounce with dignity what I cannot attain;

    But if I am wronged, my rancor and fury are fierce.

    And I dispel the crushing gloom of desperate straits,

    And keep a secret even at the cost of my neck.

    A man may one day fall into poverty, though of noble standing,

    And an inept fool's grazing herds may multiply.

    Wealth may one day abound after being scant,

    And the bough clothes itself in leaves after drought.

    And at times I give freely, though my wealth is not abundant,

    And at times I charge behind the cornered, terror-stricken man.

    And I shun deeds of sin and dishonor,

    And forsake speech that draws me toward wrongdoing.
