إنيindeed I وماand by the fact that صاحتcried out يَهودُthe Jews وطرَّبتand chanted melodiously
ثلاثَthree ليالٍnights بالحجازin the Hijaz لحاذِرُsurely wary
Indeed, by the Jews’ cries and chanting,
for three nights in the Hijaz, I am wary.
ولولاand were it not for ابنةُdaughter of الحَبرِthe rabbi اليهوديّJewish قدalready حداurged onward with song
بأجمالناwith our camels فيin نَقبِthe mountain pass of جُسمانَJusman جائرُa wandering driver
But for the Jewish rabbi’s daughter, someone would already have urged on with song
our camels through the pass of Jusman—a wandering driver.
تقولshe says ابنةُdaughter of الحَبرِthe rabbi اليهوديّJewish ماnot أرىI see
أباfather of مِحجَنٍMihjan إِلاّexcept وللقلبِand for the heart ذاكرُa reminder
The Jewish rabbi’s daughter says, “I never see
Abu Mihjan without a reminder stirring in the heart.”
فإنّfor indeed ابنةَdaughter of الحَبرِthe rabbi اليهوديّJewish تيّمَتenthralled with love

For the Jewish rabbi’s daughter has enthralled
my heart—is there anyone to turn me away from Sumayya?
