How did Umm Yusuf make her way toward us,

with trackless deserts barring her night journey,

to young men at al-Taff whose chiefs were struck down,

and whose horses and riding camels were left behind?

And Abu Jabr's houses now stand empty,

where the weak and destitute once came seeking gifts.

And Banu Amr were now at the bridge; from them

came generosity and gifts to those whose dwellings were cold.

I did not blame myself over them, save that my soul

is bound for an appointed end not yet come to it, though near.

I did not stir until they had torn, with their spears,

    my clothes, and the great veins poured out blood;

and until I saw my filly recoiling

beside the elephant, her chest and flanks bleeding.

I did not leave until I was the last to depart,

with the worthy, the finest men, felled around me.

I passed the Ansar amid their encampment

and said to them: "Is any of you returning home today?"

And I readied Rawwah, a saddle, and a cushion,

while Bakr and Wa'il were left behind at Ullays.

Ah, may God curse those who would rejoice

at my death, not knowing what God will do.
