ماذاwhat يُقاسونَthey endure مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
Woe to the people of the Fire, there in the Fire—
Woe to the people of the Fire within the Fire!
what torments they endure from the Fire!
What they endure from the Fire!
تَنقَدُّit bursts apart مِنfrom غَيظٍrage فَتَغليso it boils بِهِمwith them
كَمِرجَلٍlike a cauldron يَغليit boils عَلىover النارِthe fire
It nearly bursts apart with rage, then boils with them
It bursts apart with rage and boils with them,
like a cauldron boiling over a flame.
like a cauldron boiling over a fire.
فَيَستَغيثونَso they cry for help لِكَيso that يُعتَبواthey may be restored to favor
مِنfrom عَثرَةِa fall into النارِthe Fire
They cry out for help, hoping to be allowed to make amends—
So they cry for help, seeking to be restored to favor:
but alas, ruin for the stumble that leads to the Fire!
Ah, for recovery from a fall into the Fire!
وَكُلُّهُمand all of them مُعتَرِفٌconfessing نادِمٌremorseful
لَوif only تُقبَلُis accepted التَوبَةُrepentance فيin النارِthe Fire
Every one of them confesses, full of remorse—
And every one of them confesses, full of regret—
if only repentance were accepted in the Fire.
if only repentance were accepted in the Fire!
يَهويhe plunges بِهاinto it الأَشقىthe most wretched عَلىupon رَأسِهِhis head

فَالوَيلُso woe لِلأَشقىto the most wretched مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
The most wretched plunges into it headfirst;
The most wretched plunges into it headfirst;
woe, then, to the most wretched in the Fire!
so woe to the most wretched from the Fire!
فَتارَةًso at times يَطفوhe floats عَلىupon جَمرِهاits embers
وَتارَةًand at times يَرسُبُhe sinks فيin النارِthe Fire
Now he floats upon its embers,
At times he floats upon its embers,
and now he sinks into the Fire.
and at times he sinks into the Fire.

فَرَّhe flees مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire إِلىinto النارِthe Fire
Whenever he seeks to flee through it,
And whenever he seeks escape within it,
he flees from fire only into fire.
he flees from the Fire into the Fire.
يَطوفُhe wanders مِنfrom أَفعىa viper إِلىto أَرقَمٍa speckled serpent
وَسُمُّهاand its venom أَقوىmore potent مِنَthan النارِthe Fire
He passes from one viper to another speckled serpent,
He wanders from a viper to a speckled serpent,
whose venom is fiercer than the Fire.
and its venom is more potent than the Fire.
وَكَمand how many بِهاwithin it مِنof أَرقَمٍa speckled serpent لاnot يَنيit tires
يَلسَعُit stings مَنwhoever يُسحَبُis dragged فيin النارِthe Fire
How many speckled serpents are there, never ceasing
And many a speckled serpent within it never ceases
to sting whoever is dragged through the Fire!
to sting whoever is dragged through the Fire.
لاno راحَةٌrest فيهاin it وَلاnor فَترَةٌrespite
هَيهاتَfar from it! لاno راحَةَrest فيin النارِthe Fire
There is no rest in it, no respite—
There is no rest there, nor any respite;
far from it! There is no rest in the Fire.
far from it! There is no rest in the Fire.

وَهَكَذاand thus الأَنفاسُthe breaths فيin النارِthe Fire
Its choking breaths close down over them;
Its breaths enclose them from above,
such is every breath within the Fire.
and such are the breaths in the Fire.
سُبحانَglory be to مَنthe One who يُمسِكُholds أَرواحَهُمtheir souls
فيin الدَرَكِthe depth الأَسفَلِthe lowest فيin النارِthe Fire
Glory be to Him who keeps their souls within them
Glory be to Him who holds their souls
in the lowest depth of the Fire.
in the lowest depth within the Fire.

Were the mountains of the earth cast into it,
And were the earth's mountains to plunge into it,
they would melt like molten copper in the Fire.
they would melt as copper melts in fire.

وَلَمand not يَكُنhe was مِنamong حَصَبِthe fuel of النارِthe Fire
Blessed is one who gains the abode of the God-fearing
Bliss to whoever gains the abode of piety
and does not become fuel for the Fire.
and is not fuel for the Fire.
وَوَيلُand woe to مَنwhoever عُمِّرَwas granted life دَهراًfor a long time وَلَمand not

And woe to one granted a lifetime of years, yet
And woe to one granted a long life, yet not
shown no mercy and never freed from the Fire.
shown mercy, nor set free from the Fire!
ياO أَيُّهاyou الناسُpeople خُذواtake حِذرَكُمyour precautions
وَحَصِّنواand fortify الجَنَّةَthe shield (contextually read junnah) لِلنارِagainst the Fire
O people, be on your guard,
O people, take your precautions,
and make Paradise your fortress against the Fire.
and fortify the shield against the Fire.
فَإِنَّهاfor indeed it is مِنamong شَرِّthe worst of أَعدائِكُمyour enemies
ماnot فيamong العِداenemies أَعدىmore hostile مِنَthan النارِthe Fire
For it is among the worst of your enemies;
For it is among the worst of your enemies;
among all foes, none is more hostile than the Fire.
no enemy is more hostile than the Fire.
وَأَكثِرواand increase مِنin ذِكرِremembrance of مَولاكُمُyour Master
فَذِكرُهُfor remembering Him يُنجيsaves مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
Remember your Lord abundantly,
And remember your Master often,
for remembrance of Him delivers from the Fire.
for remembering Him saves from the Fire.
واعَجَباًoh, what wonder! مِنat مَرِحٍa merry man لاعِبٍplayful

يَلهوhe amuses himself وَلاand does not يَحفِلُcare بِالنارِabout the Fire
How astonishing is the gleeful trifler
Oh, how strange is a merry, playful man,
who plays heedlessly and cares nothing for the Fire!
who amuses himself and pays no heed to the Fire!
يوقِنُhe is certain بِالنارِof the Fire وَلاand does not يَرعَويtake heed
كَأَنَّهُas though he يَرتابُdoubts فيabout النارِthe Fire
He is certain of the Fire, yet does not desist,
He is certain of the Fire, yet takes no heed,
as though he doubted the Fire,
as though he doubts the Fire.
وَهوَwhile he بِهاbecause of it فيin خَطَرٍdanger بَيِّنٍclear

لَوif كاسَhe were wise ماnot خاطَرَhe would risk بِالنارِwith the Fire
though he plainly stands in danger of it.
And he is in clear danger from it;
Were he prudent, he would never risk the Fire.
if he were wise, he would not risk the Fire.
إِنَّindeed الأَلِبّاءَthe wise هُمُthey قِلَّةٌfew
فَرّواthey fled إِلىto اللَهِGod مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
Those truly endowed with understanding are few:
Indeed, the wise are few;
they flee to God from the Fire.
they have fled to God from the Fire.

They divorce this world irrevocably and never
And they divorced the world irrevocably, and did not
look back upon it, for fear of the Fire.
turn back to it, for fear of the Fire.
وَأَبصَرواand they saw مِنamong عَيبِهاits faults أَنَّهاthat it
فَتّانَةٌa temptress تَدعوit calls إِلىto النارِthe Fire
They perceive among its faults that it is
And they saw among its faults that it
a temptress calling people to the Fire.
is a temptress calling to the Fire.
فَطابَتِso became content الأَنفُسُthe souls مِنهُمwithin them بِأَنbecause

أَمَّنَهُمHe made them safe مِنfrom فَزَعِthe terror of النارِthe Fire
Their souls are content because
So their souls were content that
He has secured them from the terror of the Fire.
He made them safe from the terror of the Fire.
وَاللَهِby God لَوif أَعقِلُI had sense لَمnot تَكتَحِلbe anointed with kohl

بِالنَومِwith sleep عَينيmy eye خيفَةَfor fear of النارِthe Fire
By God, if I truly understood, my eye would never be lined
By God, if I had sense, I would never anoint
with sleep, for fear of the Fire.
my eye with sleep, for fear of the Fire.

My tears would never cease—and I do not know
Nor would my tears cease; nor do I know
that I am safe from the Fire.
that I am safe from the Fire.

I would neither approach water nor find it easy to swallow
Nor would I approach water, nor would it go down easily for me,
whenever I remembered the molten liquid in the Fire.
when I remembered the molten metal in the Fire.
وَلَمnor أَجِدwould I find لَذَّةَthe pleasure of طَعمٍtaste إِذاwhen

I would find no savor in any food whenever
Nor would I find pleasure in any flavor when
I thought of the zaqqum tree in the Fire.
I thought of the Zaqqum in the Fire.

What enjoyment can there be in luxury if
What pleasure is there in bliss if
it leads to misery in the Fire?
it leads to misery in the Fire?
أَمor أَيُّwhat خَيرٍgood فيin سُرورٍjoy إِذاif

And what good can there be in joy if
Or what good is there in joy if
it is followed by lasting grief in the Fire?
it brings prolonged sorrow in the Fire?
فَفَكِّرواso ponder فيon هَولِهاits terror وَاِحذَرواand beware
ماwhat حَذَّرَwarned against اللَهُGod مِنَconcerning النارِthe Fire
Reflect, then, upon its horror, and beware
So ponder its terror, and beware
that Fire against which God has warned.
what God has warned of concerning the Fire.
فَإِنَّهاfor indeed it راصِدَةٌlies in wait for أَهلَهاits people
تَدُعُّهُمit thrusts them دَعّاًforcefully إِلىinto النارِthe Fire
For it lies in wait for those destined for it,
For it lies in wait for its people,
shoving them violently into the Fire.
thrusting them violently into the Fire.
فَلَيسَfor is not مِثليone like me طالِباًseeking حَبَّةًa grain

One such as I seeks no cherished thing
For one like me seeks not so much as a grain,
except deliverance from the Fire.
save deliverance from the Fire.
وَطالَماand how often استَرحَمتُهُI begged Him for mercy ضارِعاًhumbly pleading
ياO رَبُّLord حَرِّمنيmake me forbidden عَلىto النارِthe Fire
How often I have implored His mercy in humble prayer:
And often have I begged Him for mercy, humbly pleading:
“O Lord, make me forbidden to the Fire!
O Lord, forbid the Fire to touch me!
فَأَنتَfor You مَولايَmy Master وَلاand no رَبَّLord ليfor me

You are my Master; I have no lord
For You are my Master, and I have no Lord
but You. Set me free from the Fire.”
but You; set me free from the Fire.
وَلَمand not تَزَلYou have ceased تَسمَعُنيYou hear me قائِلاًsaying

أَعوذُI seek refuge بِاللَهِin God مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
And You have always heard me saying:
And You have never ceased to hear me say:
“I seek refuge in God from the Fire.”
I seek refuge in God from the Fire.
