the full moons of the age and lions of the lair:
لَقَدindeed زَلَّerred سَيِّدُكُمyour lord زَلَّةًa blunder

Your lord has indeed made a blunder,
with which he delighted the eyes of those who gloat.
تَخَيَّرَhe chose كاتِبَهُhis secretary كافِراًan unbeliever
وَلَوand if شاءَhe wished كانَhe would have been مِنَamong المُسلِمينthe Muslims
He chose an unbeliever as his secretary,
though, had he wished, the secretary could have been a Muslim.
فَعَزَّso gained strength اليَهودُthe Jews بِهِthrough him وَاِنتَخَواand grew proud
وَتاهواand swaggered وَكانواand they had been مِنَamong الأَرذلينthe basest
So the Jews gained power through him and grew proud,
and swaggered, though they had been among the basest.
وَنالواand attained مُناهُمtheir wishes وَجازواand exceeded المَدىthe limit
فَحانَso arrived الهَلاكُdestruction وَماwhile not يَشعُرونthey were aware
They attained their wishes and exceeded the bounds,
so destruction's hour arrived, though they were unaware.

لِأَرذَلِto the vilest قِردٍape مِنَamong المُشرِكينthe idolaters
For many a virtuous Muslim is submissive
to the vilest ape among the idolaters.
وَماand not كانَwas ذَلِكَthat مِنfrom سَعيِهِمtheir efforts
وَلَكِنَّbut مِنّاfrom us يَقومُarises المُعينthe helper
This did not come from their own efforts,
but their helper arises from among us.
فَهَلاso why not اِقتَدىdid he follow the example فيهُمُin dealing with them بِالأُلىof those
مِنَamong القادَةِthe leaders الخيرَةِthe good المُتَّقينthe God-fearing
Why, then, did he not follow toward them the example
of the good and God-fearing leaders,
وَأَنزَلَهُمand placed them حَيثُwhere يَستاهِلونَthey deserve
وَرَدَّهُمand returned them أَسفَلَthe lowest السافِلينof the low
and place them where they deserve to be,
and send them back to the lowest of the low?
وَطافواand they roamed لَدَيناamong us بِإِخراجِهِمupon their expulsion
عَلَيهِمupon them صِغارٌhumiliation وذلٌّand abasement وَهُونand disgrace
And they roamed among us after being cast out,
with humiliation, abasement, and disgrace upon them.
وَقَمّواand they scoured المَزابِلَthe dungheaps عَنfor خِرقَةٍa rag
مُلَوَّنَةٍcolored لِدِثارِas a shroud الدَفينfor the one to be buried
They scoured the dungheaps for a rag,
colored, to shroud the one to be buried.

They did not disdain our eminent men,
nor act arrogantly toward the righteous.

Nor did they sit with them, being of base stock,
nor accompany them among the closest companions.

تُصيبُyou reach بِظَنِّكَwith your surmise نَفسَthe very essence اليَقينof certainty
O Badis, you are a discerning man;
by your surmise you reach certainty itself.
فَكَيفَso how اِختَفَتwere hidden عَنكَfrom you أَعيانُهُمtheir very persons
وَفيand in الأَرضِthe earth تُضرَبُare struck مِنهاfrom them القُرونhorns

How, then, did their very persons escape your notice,
while their horns are struck into the earth?
وَكَيفَand how تُحِبُّdo you love فِراخَthe fledglings الزِناof fornication

And how can you love the fledglings of fornication,
when they have made you hated by all the world?
وَكَيفَand how يَتِمُّcan be achieved لَكَfor you المُرتَقىthe ascent

And how can your ascent be achieved,
if you build while they tear down?

وَقارَنتَهُand joined yourself to him وَهُوَwhile he بِيسَis wretched القَرينas a companion
And how did you place your trust in a sinner,
and join yourself to him, when he is a wretched companion?
وَقَدand indeed أَنزَلَsent down اللَهُGod فيin وَحيِهِHis revelation

And God has sent down in His revelation
a warning against the company of sinners.
فَلاso do not تَتَّخِذtake مِنهُمُfrom among them خادِماًa servant
وَذَرهُمand leave them إِلىto لَعنَةِthe curse اللاعِنينof those who curse
So take no servant from among them,
and leave them to the curse of those who curse.

For the earth has cried out at their wickedness,
and nearly reeled with all of us upon it.

And how have you alone chosen to bring them near,
when throughout the lands they are among the banished,

though you are the favored king,
a scion of kings among the illustrious,

and you have precedence among humankind,
just as you are among the greatest of the foremost?

And I indeed settled in Granada,
and would see them there acting wantonly.

They had divided it and its districts,
so in every place there was an accursed one of them.

They wear the finest garments,
while you wear the humblest of them.

They are your trustees over your secrets,
but how can an inveterate traitor be trustworthy?
وَيَأكُلُand consumes غَيرُهُمsomeone other than them دِرهَماًa dirham

فَيُقصىso is banished وَيُدنَونَwhile they are brought near إِذas يَأكُلونthey consume
Someone other than them consumes a dirham,
and is banished, while they are brought close as they consume.
وَقَدand indeed ناهَضوكُمthey have opposed you إِلىeven as far as رَبِّكُمyour Lord
فَماyet not تَمنَعونَdo you restrain وَلاand not تَنكِرونdo you denounce
They have risen against you, even against your Lord,
yet you neither restrain nor denounce them.

They have entangled you with their spells,
so you neither hear nor see.

Their ape has clad his house in marble,
and channeled to it the sweet water of springs.

So our needs have come to depend on him,
while we stand at his door.

فَإِنّاso indeed we إِلىto رَبِّناour Lord راجِعونare returning
He laughs at us and at our religion;
so surely we shall return to our Lord.
وَلَوand if قُلتَyou said فيof مالِهِhis wealth إِنَّهُthat it is

كَمالِكَlike your wealth كُنتَyou would be مِنَamong الصادِقينthe truthful
And if you said of his wealth that it was
like your own wealth, you would be among the truthful.

So hasten to slaughter him as an offering,
and sacrifice him, for he is a fat ram.
وَلاand do not تَرفَعِlift الضَغطَthe pressure عَنfrom رَهطِهِhis clan

فَقَدfor indeed كَنَزواthey have hoarded كُلَّevery عِلقٍprecious possession ثَمينcostly
And do not ease the pressure upon his clan,
for they have hoarded every costly treasure.
وَفَرِّقand scatter عِداهُمtheir enemies وَخُذand take مالَهُمtheir wealth
فَأَنتَfor you أَحَقُّhave more right بِماto what يَجمَعونthey gather

And scatter their enemies and take their wealth,
for you have more right to what they gather.

Do not think that killing them is an act of treachery;
rather, treachery lies in letting them run riot.
وَقَدand indeed نَكَثواthey have broken عَهدَناour covenant عِندَهُمwith them

فَكَيفَso how تُلامُcan you be blamed عَلىon account of الناكِثينthe oath-breakers
They have broken the covenant we had with them,
so how can you be blamed on account of the oath-breakers?
وَكَيفَand how تَكونُcan there be لَهُمfor them ذِمَّةٌa covenant of protection
وَنَحنُwhile we خُمولٌare obscure وَهُمand they ظاهِرونare prominent

And how can they have a covenant of protection,
when we are obscure and they are prominent?
وَنَحنُand we الأَذِلَّةُthe abased مِنfrom بَينِهِمamong them

We are the abased ones among them,
as though we had done wrong and they were doing good.

So do not condone their deeds against us,
for you are answerable for what they do.

And be mindful of your God concerning His party,
for God's party are the victors.
