فَإِنَّfor indeed الرَدىdeath غالَcarried off أَهلَthe people of التُقىpiety
فَلَمso did not يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept الغَشومُthe ruthless man العَنيدthe obstinate
For death has carried off the people of piety,
So none remained but the ruthless, obstinate man.
وَأَودىand brought death بِكُلِّto every خَليلٍclose friend وَدودٍloving
فَأَينَso where وَلاand not أَينَwhere خِلٌّa friend وَدودloving
And it carried off every loving friend.
So where—yet nowhere—is a loving friend?
وَكَمand how many مِنof أَخيa brother of ثِقَةٍtrust قَدalready لَحَدتُI buried
فَلِلَّهِso, to God (exclamatory) ماwhat غَيَّبَتهُhave hidden it اللُحودthe graves
And how many a trusted brother I have buried!
God, what the graves have hidden away!
وَأَثكَلَنيand bereft me of الأُنسَcompanionship ثُكلُloss through death of اللِداتِthe peers
فَصِرتُso I became كَأَنّيas though I were غَريبٌa stranger وَحيدalone
And the loss of my peers has bereft me of companionship,
So I have become like a stranger, alone.
وَكَمand how many مِنof شَقِيٍّa wretched man يُوارىis buried التُرابَthe earth
وَكَمand how many مِنof سَعيدٍa fortunate man يُوارىis buried الصَعيدthe soil
And how many a wretched man is buried in the earth,
And how many a fortunate man is buried in the soil.
