لَوif كُنتُI were فيin دينيmy faith مِنَamong الأَبطالِthe heroes
ماnot كُنتُI would be بِأَلوانيslack وَلاnor البَطَّالِidle
If I were among the heroes in my faith,
I would be neither slack nor idle.
وَلَبِستُand I would have donned مِنهُfrom it لَأمَةًa coat of armor فَضفاضَةًample
And I would have donned from it an ample coat of armor,
Woven from righteous deeds.
لَكِنَّنيbut I عَطَّلتُdisabled أَقواسَthe bows of التُقىpiety
مِنof نَبلِهاtheir arrows فَرَمَتso they shot بِغَيرِwithout نِبالِarrows
But I stripped the bows of piety
Of their arrows, so they shot without shafts.
وَرَمىand shot العَدوُthe enemy بِسَهمِهِwith his arrow فَأَصابَنيso he struck me
إِذsince لَمnot أُحَصِّنI had fortified جُنَّةًa shield لِنِضالِfor combat
And the enemy shot his arrow and struck me,
Since I had not fortified a shield for combat.
فَأَناso I كَمَنlike one who يَلقىmeets الكَتيبَةَthe battalion أَعزَلاًunarmed
فيin مَأزِقٍa narrow pass مُتَعَرِّضاًexposed لِنِزالِto battle
So I am like one who meets a battalion unarmed,
In a narrow pass, exposed to battle.
لَولاwere it not for رَجاءُhope of العَفوِpardon كُنتُI would be كَناقِعٍlike one quenching
بَرحَthe agony of الغَليلِthirst بِرَشفِby sipping لَمعِthe gleam of الآلِthe mirage
Were it not for hope of pardon, I would be like one quenching
The agony of thirst by sipping a shimmering mirage.
شابَturned gray القُذالُthe back of the head فَآنَso it is time ليfor me أَنthat أَرعَويI mend my ways
لَوif كُنتُI were مُتَّعِظاًtaking warning بِشَيبِfrom the graying of قَذالِthe back of the head
The back of my head has grayed; it is time I mended my ways,
If I were to heed the gray at the back of my head.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I مُستَبصِرٌclear-sighted إِذwhen حَلَّit came بيupon me
لَعَلِمتُI would have known أَنَّthat حُلولَهُits arrival تَرحاليmy departure
And had I been clear-sighted when it came upon me,
I would have known its arrival meant my departure.
فَنَظَرتُthen I would have looked فيinto زادٍprovisions لِدارِfor the abode of إِقامَتيmy residence
وَسَأَلتُand I would have asked رَبّيmy Lord أَنto يَحُلَّloosen عِقاليmy fetter
Then I would have looked to provisions for my abiding home,
And asked my Lord to loosen my fetter.
فَلَكَمfor how often هَمَمتُI resolved بِتَوبَةٍto repent فَمُنِعتُهاso I was denied it
إِذsince لَمnot أَكُنI was أَهلاًworthy لَهاof it وَبَداand a new thought arose ليto me
For how often I resolved to repent, only to be denied it,
Since I was unworthy of it, and changed my mind.
وَيَعِزُّand it is grievous ذاكَthat عَلَيَّto me إِلّاexcept أَنَّنيthat I
مُتَقَلِّبٌturned about فيin قَبضَةِthe grasp of المُتَعاليthe Most High
And that pains me, yet I
Am turned about in the grasp of the Most High.
وَوَصَلتُand I joined myself to دُنياa world سَوفَwill تَقطَعُsever شَأفَتيmy root
بِأُفولِwith the setting of أَنجُمِهاits stars وَخَسفِand the eclipse of هِلاليmy crescent
And I have joined myself to a world that will uproot me,
With the setting of its stars and the eclipse of my crescent.
شَغَلَتit engrossed مُفَتَّنَthe beguiled among أَهلِهاits people بِفُتونِهاwith its temptations
وَمِنَand among المُحالِabsurdities تَشاغُلٌpreoccupation بِمُحالِwith absurdity
It has engrossed the beguiled among its people with its temptations,
And it is absurd to be engrossed in absurdity.
لاno شَيءَthing أَخسَرُmore ruinous صَفقَةًin a bargain مِنthan عالِمٍa scholar
لَعِبَتhas toyed بِهِwith him الدُنياthe world مَعَalongside الجُهالِthe ignorant
No one loses more in a bargain than a scholar
Whom the world has toyed with alongside the ignorant.
فَغَداso he came to يُفَرِّقُscatter دينَهُhis faith أَيديthe scattered bands of سَباSaba
وَيُزيلُهُand casts it off حِرصاًout of eagerness لِجَمعِto amass المالِwealth
So he scatters his faith like Saba's scattered people,
And casts it off in his zeal to amass wealth.
لاno خَيرَgood فيin كَسبِearning الحَرامِthe unlawful وَقَلَّماand seldom
يُرجىis hoped for الخَلاصُdeliverance لِكاسِبٍfor one who earns لِحَلالِlawful gain
There is no good in unlawful gain, and seldom
Can one who earns lawful wealth hope for deliverance.
ماnot إِنat all (emphatic) سَمِعتُI have heard بِعائِلٍof a pauper تُكوىis branded غَداًtomorrow
بِالنارِwith fire جَبهَتُهُhis forehead عَلىfor الإِقلالِpoverty
Never have I heard of a pauper to be branded tomorrow,
With fire on his forehead for his poverty.
وَإِنand if أَرَدتَyou want صَحيحَa true account of مَنwho يُكوىis branded بِهاby it
فَاِقرَأthen read عَقيبَةَwhat follows سورَةِSurah الأَنفالِal-Anfal
And if you want a true account of who is branded by it,
Then read the surah that follows al-Anfal.
ماnot يَثقُلُgrows heavy الميزانُthe scales إِلّاexcept بِاِمرِئٍfor a man
قَدalready خَفَّhas grown light كاهِلُهُhis upper back مِنَof الأَثقالِburdens
The scales grow heavy only for a man
Whose shoulders have grown light of burdens.
فَخُذِso take الكَفافَwhat suffices وَلاand do not تَكُنbe ذاpossessing فَضلَةٍa surplus
فَالفَضلُfor the surplus تُسأَلُyou will be questioned عَنهُabout it أَيَّwhat a سُؤالِquestioning
So take what suffices, and possess no surplus;
For the surplus—you will be questioned about it, and how!
وَدَعِand leave المَطارِفَfine cloaks وَالمَطِيَّand mounts لِأَهلِهاto their owners
وَاِقنَعand be content بِأَطمارٍwith rags وَلُبسِand wearing نِعالِsandals
And leave fine cloaks and mounts to their owners,
And be content with rags and wearing sandals.
فَهُمُfor they وَأَنتَand you وَفَقرُناand our poverty وَغِناهُمand their wealth
لاnot يَستَقِرُّremains fixed وَلاnor يَدومُendures بِحالِin any state
For they and you, our poverty and their wealth,
Do not remain fixed or endure in any state.
وَطُفِand roam البِلادَthe lands لِكَيso that تَرىyou may see آثارَthe traces of مَنthose who
قَدonce كانَwas يَملِكُهاruling them مِنَamong الأَقيالِthe princes
And roam the lands to see the traces of those
Princes who once ruled them.
عَصَفَتswept fiercely بِهِمupon them ريحُthe wind of الرَدىdeath فَذَرَتهُمُso it scattered them
ذَروَas the scattering by الرِياحِthe winds الهَوجِraging حِقفَa curved dune of رِمالِsand
The wind of death swept upon them and scattered them,
As raging winds scatter a curved dune of sand.
وَتَزَلزَلَتand shook بِهُمُbeneath them المَنابِرُthe pulpits بَعدَafter ماthat
ثَبَتَتhad stood firm وَكانواand they were فَوقَهاupon them كَجِبالِlike mountains
And the pulpits shook beneath them after
They had stood firm, their occupants above them like mountains.
وَاِحبِسand halt قَلوصَكَyour young she-camel ساعَةًa while بِطُلولِهِمat their ruins
وَاِحذَرand beware عَلَيكَfor your own sake بِهاthere مِنَof الأَغوالِthe ghouls
And halt your young she-camel a while at their ruins,
And beware of ghouls there, for your own sake.
فَلَكَمfor how many بِهاthere مِنof أَرقَمٍa speckled snake صِلٍّa deadly viper وَكَمand how many
قَدonce كانَthere were فيهاthere مِنof مَهاًoryxes وَغَزالِand gazelles
For how many a speckled, deadly viper is there, and how many
Oryxes and gazelles were once there!
وَلَكَمand how many غَدَتwent out at dawn مِنهاfrom there وَراحَتand went out at dusk حَلَبَةًa troop
لِلحَربِfor war يَقدُمُهاleads it أَبوthe father of الأَشبالِlion cubs
And how many a troop went out from there, morning and evening,
For war, led by the father of lion cubs!
فَتَقَطَّعَتso were severed أَسبابُهُمtheir bonds وَتَمَزَّقَتand were torn apart
وَلَقَبلَand indeed formerly ماemphasis كانواthey were كَنَظمِlike a string of لَآَلِpearls
So their bonds were severed and torn apart,
Yet formerly they had been like a string of pearls.
وَإِذاand when أَتَيتَyou reach قُبورَهُمtheir graves فَاِسأَلهُمthen ask them
عَماabout what لَقواthey encountered فيهاin them مِنَof الأَهوالِterrors
And when you reach their graves, ask them
About the terrors they encountered within them.
فَسَيُخبِرونَكَthen they will tell you إِنif فَهِمتَyou understand بِحالِهِمthrough their condition
بِعِبارَةٍby an expression كَالوَحيِlike revelation لاnot بِمَقالِthrough speech
Then they will tell you, if you understand, through their condition,
By a message like revelation, not by speech:
إِنّاindeed we بِهاin them رَهنٌare held in pledge إِلىuntil يَومِthe Day of الجَزاRecompense
بِجَرائِمِfor the crimes of الأَقوالِwords وَالأَفعالِand deeds
Indeed, we are held here in pledge until the Day of Recompense,
For the crimes of words and deeds.
مَنwhoever لاnot يُراقِبُis mindful of رَبَّهُhis Lord وَيَخافُهُand fears Him
تَبَّتmay perish يَداهُhis two hands وَماand not لَهُfor him مِنany والِprotector
Whoever neither heeds his Lord nor fears Him—
May his hands perish; he has no protector.
