لَبَرَّزتُ في مَيدانِ كُلِّ بِطالَةٍ

لَبَرَّزتُ في مَيدانِ كُلِّ بِطالَةٍ

وَبَرَّزَ غَيري في التُقى أَيَّ تَبريزِ

وَبَرَّزَ غَيري في التُقى أَيَّ تَبريزِ

Indeed, I excelled in the arena of every idleness,

I have indeed excelled in every arena of idleness,

While others excelled in piety—how splendidly they excelled!

While others have excelled in piety—how greatly they excelled!

إِذا لَم يَكُن فَهمي إِلى الخَيرِ قائِدي

إِذا لَم يَكُن فَهمي إِلى الخَيرِ قائِدي

فَلا كانَ فَهمي لا وَلا كانَ تَميِيزي

فَلا كانَ فَهمي لا وَلا كانَ تَميِيزي

If my understanding is not my guide toward the good,

If my understanding does not guide me toward goodness,

Then away with my understanding, and away with my discernment.

Then may my understanding be no more—no, nor my discernment.

تَطَلَّبتُ إِخوانَ الصَفا فَوَجَدتُهُم

تَطَلَّبتُ إِخوانَ الصَفا فَوَجَدتُهُم

زُيوفاً كَأَعمالي وَمَن لي بِإِبريزِ

زُيوفاً كَأَعمالي وَمَن لي بِإِبريزِ

I sought the brethren of purity, but found them

I sought brothers of sincerity, and found them

Counterfeit, like my deeds—and who will bring me pure gold?
