أَأَحورُShall I turn back عَنfrom قَصديmy purpose وَقَدand already بَرَحَhas lifted الخَفاconcealment
وَوَقَفتُand I have stood مِنof عُمريmy life القَصيرِshort عَلىon شَفاa brink
Shall I turn back from my purpose, now that concealment has lifted,
and I have reached the brink of my short life?
وَأَرىand I see شُؤونَthe tear ducts العَينِof the eye تُمسِكُhold back ماءَهاtheir water
وَلَقَبلَand indeed, formerly ماemphatic particle حَكَتِthey resembled السَحابَthe clouds الوُكَّفاrain-pouring
And I see the eye’s tear ducts holding back their water,
though once they had resembled the rain-pouring clouds.
وَأَخالُand I think ذاكَthat لِعِبرَةٍas a lesson عَرَضَتbefell لَهاthem
مِنfrom قَسوَةٍhardness فيin القَلبِthe heart أَشبَهتِresembled الصَفاsmooth rock
And I think that has befallen them as a lesson,
from a hardness in the heart resembling smooth rock.
وَلَقَلَّand indeed, little is ليfor me طولُthe length البُكاءِof weeping لِهَفوَتيover my lapse
فَلَرُبَّماfor perhaps شَفَعَhas interceded البُكاءُweeping لِمَنfor whoever هَفاerred
And for me, long weeping over my lapse is all too little;
for weeping may intercede for one who has erred.
إِنَّindeed المَعاصِيَsins لاdo not تُقيمُdwell بِمَنزِلٍin a dwelling
إِلّاexcept لِتَجعَلَto make مِنهُof it قاعاًa plain صَفصَفاbare and level
Indeed, sins never settle in a dwelling
except to turn it into a bare, level plain.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I داوَيتُI treated مَعطَبَthe deadly harm دائِهاof their disease
بِمَراهِمِwith the salves التَقوىof piety لَوافَقتِI would have found الشِفاhealing
And had I treated the deadly harm of their disease
with the salves of piety, I would have found healing,
وَلَعِفتُand I would have shunned مَورِدَهاtheir watering place المَشوبَtainted بِرَنقِهاwith their murk
وَغَسَلتُand I would have washed رَينَthe rust القَلبِof the heart فيin عَينِthe spring الصَفاof purity
and shunned their watering place, tainted by their murk,
and washed the heart’s rust in the spring of purity,
وَهَزَمتُand I would have routed جَحفَلَthe mighty host غَيِّهاof their error بِإِنابَةٍthrough repentance
وَسَلَلتُand I would have drawn مِنfrom نَدَمٍremorse عَلَيهاover them مُرهَفاa keen-edged sword
and routed the mighty host of their error through repentance,
and drawn from remorse for them a keen-edged sword,
وَهَجَرتُand I would have forsaken دُنياa world لَمhas not تَزَلceased غَدّارَةًtreacherous
بِمُؤَمِّليهاtoward those who hope in it المُمحِضينَwho offer wholeheartedly لَهاto it الوَفاloyalty
and forsaken a world that has always been treacherous
to those who hope in it and offer it unalloyed loyalty.
سَحَقَتهُمُit crushed them وَدِيارَهُمand their homes سَحقَthe grinding الرَحاof a millstone
فَعَلَيهُمُso upon them وَعَلىand upon دِيارِهُمtheir homes العَفاdust
It ground them and their homes as a millstone grinds;
so dust lies upon them and upon their homes.
وَلَقَدand indeed يُخافُis feared عَلَيهِمُfor them مِنfrom رَبِّهِمtheir Lord
يَومَthe Day الجَزاءِof Recompense النارَthe Fire إِلّاexcept إِنif عَفاHe pardons
And indeed, what is feared for them from their Lord
on the Day of Recompense is the Fire—unless He pardons.
إِنَّindeed الجَوادَthe thoroughbred horse إِذاwhen تَطَلَّبَseeks غايَةًa goal
بَلَغَreaches المَدىthe farthest bound مِنهاof it وَبَذَّand outstrips المُقرِفاthe crossbred horse
Indeed, when a thoroughbred horse strives for a goal,
it reaches the farthest bound and outstrips the crossbred horse.
شَتّانَhow far apart بَينَbetween مُشَمِّرٍone girding himself لِمَعادِهِfor his final return
أَبَداًalways وَآخَرَand another لاdoes not يَزالُcease مُسَوِّفاprocrastinating
How far apart are one girding himself for his final return
at all times, and another who is forever procrastinating!
إِنّيindeed I دَعَوتُكَI have called upon You مُلحِفاًinsistently لِتُجيرَنيthat You may protect me
مِمّاfrom what أَخافُI fear فَلاso do not تَرُدَّturn away المُلحِفاthe insistent supplicant
Indeed, I have called upon You insistently, that You may protect me
from what I fear; so do not turn away the insistent supplicant.
