Turn the riding camels aside toward the vast wasteland,
Ride with vigor to youth overflowing,
and halt beside a grave that holds the apple of my eye.
And halt at a grave that holds my vision.

You will recognize its place by the sleeper within,
Its location you will discern from his resting place,
and from it the fragrant one's scent will make him known to you.
And the sweet scent of perfume will waft to you from him.

How much piety, how much chastity,
and noble roots and unsullied honor.
Noble lineage and pure honor he contained!

And bid peace unto him, from one whose grief
has rent him with a wound that no healer can mend.
Has split wide open with no mender.

To unite with his phantom visitor.

I revive my languid heart with his specter,
Perhaps I shall join him; I am no betrayer.
Since I will meet with him and not depart.

I am indeed abashed before him, though he lies hidden
I am shy before him while he is buried
in his burial niche, as though he were present.
In his vault as if he were present.

with me; no one but him passes through my mind.
For naught else occupies my thoughts.

If his body lies wrapped in decay
my love for him will never decay through all time.
My love for him through time will not diminish.

He shared with me the best company,
how I mourn him, that most devoted companion!
My longing for him among the finest comrades.

He was nothing less than unique - I do not hope
replacement for such a one, so I elegized him in rare verses.
To replace him even with rarities.

I would have died the day he died, not lingered,
I'd have resigned when he passed and not lingered.

and carved his tomb within the sheath of my heart,
I would have clove open my heart’s recess as his tomb
and watered its dusky earth with the water of my eyes.
And quenched it with the water of my tears.

I find pleasure in my heart that he
within it, and guard him with the eye of my innermost thoughts.
Resides in it, and I tend to him in my conscience.

I ask forgiveness for him and pardon
for him from the generous, forgiving Lord.
From the ever generous, oft forgiving Lord.

Maidens with ankle bracelets and wrist bands,

reserved as a reward for the patient, afflicted man.
Reserved as reward for the steadfast sufferer.

My arms have been emptied, I stand alone, so if
traded for her, I shall be the most successful trader.
I profited I was the most profitable of traders,

And if I am deprived, if my lot does not win me them,
then, by God's life, I am the greatest loser of all.
By God, I am still the biggest loser.

One who surpasses sixty, to busy himself
to be absorbed in Juml, al-Rabab, and Ghadir.
With singing girls and flutes is unseemly,

Rather, his concern should be provisions for his final return,
Rather, his duty is to prepare provisions for his return trip
for provisions are every traveler's most pressing concern.
For provisions are the most pressing of all travelers concerns.

An old man's sole aim should be piety,
Piety alone befits the old,
not to wander love-struck after young oryxes.
Not to wander lustfully sniffing at ruins.

The graceful maidens' natures recoil from him in aversion;
The nature of youth has turned from him in dislike,
and attachment to one who shuns you is torment.
For weariness relates to that which causes alienation.

Does a warrior face his rival in battle
When do contemporaries in battle meet
except with a blue-steel spear or a keen, cleaving sword?
Except with gleaming swords or lances that pierce?

And when an unarmed man plunges into a tight fight,
And when a vulnerable man plunges into difficulty
he becomes the captive, not the captor.
He becomes captive and ceases to be captor.

Who yearns for a languid breast and glance
but a carefree man in a languid age.
Save one alone in a languid time?

It suffices me the book of God, it is my delight
and my solace in my loneliness is in my books.
And my comfort in my desolation with my scrolls.

by which whoever does not stray from it is saved.
Which saves those who do not oppose it.

It is time for me to awaken and mind myself
if only I were one whose powers of insight were sound.
If my insight is fit to function.

from me, while my gray hair arrives with armies.

the victor's lot-arrows have long been held high.
To make swift steeds of the symbols of conquest fly.

but our principle is: no analogy from a rare exception.
For principles are not based on outliers

I turn from it like a falcon breaking prey.

As a prisoner answers his captor’s call.

They did not approve of lengthy sermons, but favored
They did not praise prolonging speech, only saw shortening it virtuous though the lectern was raised high.
brevity whenever they mounted pulpits.
And when they saw the methodical fluency of words

that brings a sorcerer's breath to discerning minds.

When I saw that the earth's water had turned
And the least sip was hard for me to swallow,
murky, a bird's sip of it sufficed me.
If I was content to drink tainted water
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيI أَرضىaccept القَذاimpurities فيin مَشرَبيmy drink
لَكَرَعتُI would drink deeply كَرعَةَa draught ظامِئٍof a thirsty one بِهَواجِرِin the midday heats
Had I been content with impurities in my drinking water,
I would have gulped it down in mighty droughts,
I would have drunk deep like one parched in the midday heat,
And crossed the sea of fortunes seeking wealth
وَعَبَرتُand I would cross بَحرَthe sea الرِزقِof livelihood أَلتَمِسُseeking الغِنىwealth
حِرصاًout of eagerness عَلَيهِfor it وَكُنتُand I would be أَمهَرَthe most skillful ماهِرِof the skilled
and crossed the sea of livelihood in search of wealth,
Vying intensely like the most skilled seafarer,
eager for it, and been the most skillful of all.
Instead, I substituted with moderation
لَكِنَّنيbut I عَوَضتُreplaced مِنهُfor it عِنايَةًconcern
بِقَناعَةٍwith contentment وَتَجَمُّلٍand dignity فيin الظاهِرِoutward appearance
But I have replaced concern for it
And graceful frugality in outward matters.
with contentment and a dignified outward bearing.
For some wealth can actually harm its owners
فَمِنَfor among الغِنىwealth ماthat which قَدmay يَضُرُّharm بِأَهلِهِits owners
وَالفَقرُand poverty عِندَbefore اللَهِGod لَيسَis not بِضائِرِharmful
For some wealth may harm those who possess it,
While poverty in God’s eyes damages no one.
while poverty does no harm in God's sight.
I have acquired all the food I need
وَلَقَدand indeed أَصَبتُI have obtained مِنَof المَطاعِمِfoods حاجَتيmy need
وَمِنَand of المَلابِسِclothing فَوقَbeyond ماwhat هُوَis ساتِريcovering me
I have obtained all the food I need,
And clothing beyond what covers my body,
and clothing beyond what is needed to cover me.
And by your life, I have been honored among my neighbors
وَأَناand I لَعَمرُكَby your life مُكَرَّمٌhonored فيamong جيرَتيmy neighbors
وَمُعَظَّمٌand esteemed وَمُبَجَّلٌand revered بِعَشائِريamong my clans
By your life, I am honored among my neighbors,
Revered, regarded highly by my clan,
and esteemed and revered among my clans.
And tomorrow at the racing field we will meet
وَغَداًand tomorrow بِمَيدانِon the course السِباقِof the race سَنَلتَقيwe shall meet
فَيُرىthen will be distinguished الثَقيلُthe heavy مِنَfrom الخَفيفِthe light الضامِرِlean
Tomorrow we shall meet upon the racecourse,
For the clumsy one to be distinguished from the nimble weakling.
and the heavy will be distinguished from the light and lean.
Woe, a terrible woe to me, if my Protector
واalas سَوأَتاmy shame إِنif كُنتُI am سُكَّيتاًthe last finisher بِهِon it
أَرجوI hope اللِحاقَto catch up عَلىon هَجينٍa crossbred mount عاثِرِstumbling
Ah, my shame, if I come last upon it,
Is not in those dire straits my ally!
hoping to catch up on a stumbling crossbred mount!
I thank Him for His great gifts
وَالوَيلُand woe كُلُّall الوَيلِwoe ليto me إِنif لَمnot يَكُنis
مَولايَmy Lord فيin تِلكَthose الشَدائِدِhardships ناصِريmy helper
And woe, utter woe to me, if
For He keeps His promise to the grateful one,
my Lord is not my helper in those hardships.
And I implore Him with the sincerity of one returning
إِنّيindeed I لَأَشكُرُهُsurely thank Him عَلىfor آلائِهِHis blessings
فَهُوَfor He الوَفيُّthe faithful بِعَهدِهِto His promise لِلشّاكِرِto the grateful
I do indeed thank Him for His blessings,
For it is He in whom I place hope to seal my poverty.
for He is faithful to His promise to the grateful.
وَإِلَيهِand to Him أَضرَعُI plead فيin إِنابَةِthe repentance مُخلِصٍof a sincere devotee
فَهُوَfor He الَّذيthe one whom أَرجوI hope in لِسَدِّfor meeting مَفاقِريmy needs
To Him I plead, turning back in sincere devotion,
for He is the one I hope will meet my needs.
