أَفنَى الأَنامَ بِشِعرِهِ المَشؤُومِ
May both hands of Marj al-Kuhul perish, for he
May the hands of the wine merchant wither, for
Has annihilated mankind with his ill-omened poetry.
His poems have destroyed souls.

The ill omen of his praise has indeed destroyed Islam;
The ill-omened praise poems have ruined Islam -
Why did he not direct a poem of praise to the Romans?
Why didn't he write a praise poem for Rome instead?
