أَمَرجَ الكُحلِ لا تَقرَب إِلَينا

حَوالَينا مَديحُكَ لا عَلَينا
O Marj al-Kuhl, do not come near us.
O kohl of the eyes, do not come near us
Let your praise fall around us, not upon us.
Your praises surround us, but do not touch us

Why do you speak our praises unjustly,
Why do you unjustly praise us?
When we have neither wronged you nor transgressed?
We have not wronged you, or transgressed against you

And you recite no poetry except:
Do not recite poetry except that
“And death was an adornment for young men.”
Death was an adornment for the youth
