I forsook my family and companions,

And my love made hardship easy.

And the eye's fire has made

    My iron a keen-edged sword.

And in all but love, my heart—

I find it harsh and hard.

When love's anguish wastes my body,

    My hope refreshes the heart.

And death meant little as I kissed

    A mouth sweet to behold.

And oh, how I long for a cheek

That shows me flowers and grass,

And buttocks surging like a sea,

And hair flying like a flock.

And around the waist, a girdle

    Over lushness that lamented drought.

And many a night that let down

    Her moist hair over us

    We spent in safety,

While love lay open to plunder.
