    وَأَعظَمُ مِنهُ لَو يَرى الرُشدَ راشِدُ

    You deem a killing in the sacred month a grave offense;

yet greater than that—if a discerning man could see the right course—

is your turning away from what Muhammad says,

and disbelief in him—and God, my Lord, is witness—

and your driving its people from God's mosque,

so that no one may be seen prostrating to God in the House.

For we, though you reproached us for killing him,

and a wrongdoer and an envier spread alarming rumors about Islam,

gave our spears a draught from Ibn al-Hadrami—

at Nakhlah, when Waqid kindled war—

of blood; and Uthman, son of Abd Allah, is among us,

an unyielding rawhide shackle wrestling with him.
