    Tell me in earnest: what ails your eye that it does not sleep?

    As though its eyelids were full of wounds.

    وَدَمعُ العَينِ أَهوَنُهُ اِنسِجامُ

    Because of a calamity that has grown immense and grave;

    And the eye's tears, at their mildest, pour forth.

    We were bereaved of the Prophet, and among us he was

    A leader of honor—what an excellent leader!

    فَنَحنُ اليَومَ لَيسَ لَنا قِوامُ

    And he was our mainstay and the head among us;

    So today we have no mainstay.

    We surge in turmoil and lament what we have endured,

    And the sacred city laments his loss.

    As though our noses had been cut off,

    For in the loss of Muhammad lies utter devastation.

    تَمامِ نُبُوَّةٍ وَبِهِ الخِتامُ

    At the loss of a radiant, fair Hashimite,

    The completion of prophethood, with whom it was sealed;

    Trustworthy and chosen, calling to goodness,

    Like the full moon's light, from which darkness has departed.

    I shall follow his guidance as long as I live,

    For all time, as long as doves coo.

    I adhere to his faith; and for every people

    You see, order comes from its leading men.

    We have lost revelation since you departed from us,

    And the word from God has bidden us farewell,

    Except what you have left us as a pledge,

    Which the noble sheets inherit in succession.

    عَلَيكَ بِهِ التَحِيَّةُ وَالسَلامُ

    For you have bequeathed us an inheritance of truth;

    For this, may greetings and peace be upon you,

    From the Most Merciful, in the highest gardens

    Of Firdaws, where the dwelling is delightful,

    As your father Abraham's companion there—

    So is there regret in companionship like his?

    And Isaac and Ishmael are there,

    Because they prayed to their Lord and fasted.

    So may you not be far away; for every noble man among his people

    Will be overtaken by death, even if he loathes it.

    As though, after you, there flew across the earth

    A blaze that set it and its dwellers alight.
