لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw نَبِيَّناour Prophet مُتَحَمَّلاًbeing borne away
ضاقَتgrew narrow عَلَيَّaround me بِعَرضِهِنَّdespite their breadth الدورُthe dwellings
When I saw our Prophet being borne away,
The dwellings, for all their breadth, closed in on me.
أَوهَيتُI weakened قَلبيmy heart عِندَat ذاكَthat moment بِهُلكِهِbecause of his death
وَالعَظمُand the bone مِنّيof me ماas long as حَييتُI live كَسيرُbroken
I wore my heart down then over his death,
And my bones remain broken as long as I live.

O little Aishah, alas for you! My beloved has gone to rest.
So your father is stricken, his wing crushed.
ياoh لَيتَنيwould that I مِنfrom قَبلِbefore مَهلَكِthe death of صاحِبيmy companion

Oh, would that I, before my companion’s death,
Had been hidden in a grave, with rocks above me.
لِلمُنجِدينَfor those who give aid حَوائِجٌneeds مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him

Those who give aid face needs after him
Under which ribs and breasts grow weary.
