Have dwellings from your companions’ days stirred your longing,
effaced these eight years now gone by?

Is it because your eyes saw a dwelling, a campsite,
at the bend of al-Hala, that your eyes race to weep?

I say, as doves have stirred my longing,
“Stop and console me, O you two men!

that you have not chosen for yourselves
what the two angels would accept from you.

Come to the faith of the Prophet Muhammad,
even if it were in the remotest mountains of Oman.

You see her, though she has neither been whipped nor felt fear,
alternating between long strides and a bounding trot,

إِذا خُلِطَ الإِرقالُ بِالوَخَدانِ
as though a cat were at the fastening of her stirrup,
when swift trotting mingles with rapid strides.

جَزاكُم إِلهي نُصحَكُم وَجَزاني
I gave you my honest counsel, but you do not accept it.
May my God repay you for your counsel, and repay me.

So I praise my majestic Lord, for it is
by His grace that He rescued and guided me.

And the Most High, Lord of the Throne, has always held His faith
in tender care—so what do you two now doubt?

Abu Jahl perished, and his soul was hurled
into the Fire by two hell-wardens racing one another.
