so I recognize the ruins only through remembrance.

And God did not send the prophet Muhammad
with his revelation except that he might rise high and prevail.

So he raised him in triumph above every idolater,
and his afflictions befell the most unbelieving.
وَأَفلَحَand prospered مَنwhoever قَدindeed كانَwas لِلَّهِto God طائِعاًobedient

And how often they gave their souls' utmost strength for God,
and through that giving became leaders of humankind.
فَهُمfor they are خيرَةُthe chosen ones الرَحمنِof the All-Merciful مِنabove كُلِّevery مُشرِكٍidolater

They gave their enemies nothing but a straightened spear—
solid, Rudayni—and a keen, hard-steeled sword.
أُباةٌunyielding men يَفوزُtriumphs مَنwhoever تَقَدَّمَadvances مِنهُمُamong them

Unyielding men: whoever advances among them triumphs,
and whoever has lagged behind will yet attain triumph.

They rushed upon their enemy on the day of Badr,
each man unafraid amid battle's terror,

on every supple Akhdari steed, seasoned in war,
with water seen streaming down its flanks.
كَأَنَّas though عَلىupon كِتفَيهِits shoulders وَاللَيلُwhile the night مُظلِمٌis dark

As though upon its shoulders in the dark of night,
when war buffeted it amid terror, there sat a lion.
يَطَأنَthey trample القَناthe spears وَالدارِعينَand armored men كَأَنَّماas though
يَطَأنَthey trample قَواريرَglass vessels العِراقِof Iraq مُكَسَّراshattered
They trample spears and armored men as though
they were trampling shattered glass vessels from Iraq.
فَكانَتthus were رِجالُthe men المُشرِكينَof the idolaters وَخَيلُهُمand their horses
يَرَونَseeing بِهِنَّin them المَوتَdeath أَسوَدَblack أَحمَراred
Thus the idolaters' men and their horses
saw in those steeds death, black and red,
إِلىuntil أَنthat أَعَزَّexalted اللَهُGod مَنwhoever كانَwas بِالهُدىto guidance
مُقِرّاًassenting وَرَدّىand clothed in الذُلَّhumiliation مَنwhoever كانَhad أَنكَراdenied
until God exalted those who held right guidance
to be true, and robed its deniers in humiliation,
وَأَوطاand made tread نَبِيَّthe prophet اللَهِof God أَطرافَthe outskirts مَكَّةٍof Mecca
وَأَدخَلَهُand brought him into البَيتَthe House العَتيقَancient المُسَتَّراveiled
and let God's prophet tread the outskirts of Mecca,
and brought him into the ancient, veiled House.
فَطَهَّرَso he cleansed مِنof أَرجاسِthe defilements مَكَّةَof Mecca بُقعَةًa place
حَقيقٌfitting لَهاfor it أَكرومَةًas an honor أَنthat تُعَطَّراit be perfumed
He cleansed a place in Mecca of its defilements,
worthy, as an honor, of being perfumed,
بِأَيديby the hands رِجالٍof men لاnot يُرامُis assailed لَهُمof theirs حِمىًa protected domain
إِذاwhen لَبِسواthey don فَوقَover الدُروعِcoats of mail السَنَوَّراfull battle armor
by the hands of men whose protected ground none dare assail,
when they don full armor over their coats of mail.
فَماand never زَالَتِceased الأَصنامُthe idols تَحبَطُfalling كُلَّماwhenever
أَشارَhe pointed إِلىtoward مِنهاof them وَثيقٍa firmly set one تَفَطَّراit split apart
And the idols kept falling: whenever
he pointed to a firmly set one of them, it split apart.
فَأَربَحَso he brought gain to أَقواماًsome peoples بِأَنفَعِthrough the most beneficial سَعيِهِمof their striving
وَضَرَّand harmed أُناساًpeople آخَرينَother وَأَخسَراand caused loss
Thus he brought some peoples gain through their most fruitful striving,
and harmed other people and brought them loss.
وَوَفّىand fulfilled for النَبِيَّthe prophet اللَهُGod ماwhat كانَhe had أَوعَداpromised
مِنَof النَصرِvictory وَالفَتحِand conquest المُبينِmanifest لِيَغفِراso he might forgive
And God fulfilled for the prophet what he had promised
of victory and manifest conquest, that he might forgive.
فَحَجَّso came on pilgrimage إِلَيهِto it الناسُthe people مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبٍside
بِأَحسَنِin the fairest دينِfaith اللَهِof God خُلقاًin character وَمَنظَراand appearance
So people came on pilgrimage to it from every side,
in God's faith, fairest in character and appearance,
كَماas شاءَهُhe willed it الرَبُّthe Lord العَظيمُthe mighty وَماand whatever يُرِدhe wills

as the mighty Lord willed it; whatever he wills
comes to be; those who hope in him feared no failure.

God decreed might and exaltation for Islam,
and God's decree was irrevocable, foreordained.
