ثُمَّthen ماnot إِنreinforces negation لَبِثَتit lingered أَنto سَكَنَتit grew still
Many a wind has raged over people,
Then it was not long before it grew still.
وَكَذاكَand so too الدَهرُtime فيin أَصنافِهِits forms
قَدَمٌa foot زَلَّتit slipped وَأُخرىand another ثَبَتَتit stood firm
And so too is time in its varied forms:
One foot has slipped, and another has stood firm.
بالِغٌone who attains ماwhat دونَهُbelow it اِستِحقاقُهُhis deserts
وَيَدٌand a hand عَمّاof what اِستَحَقَّتit deserved قَصَرَتit fell short
One attains more than he deserves,
And a hand has fallen short of what it deserved.
فَتَوَكَّلتُso I put my trust عَلىin الحَيِّthe Ever-Living الَّذيwho

So I put my trust in the Ever-Living One,
On whom no soul has ever relied in vain.
