Has a dwelling at al-Muntasa stirred your longing?

Its people departed from it and chose another.

    فَكَيفَ يُجاوِبُ أَو يُسأَلُ

    And the wind dragged its trailing skirts through it;

so how can it answer, or be questioned?

Those who once dwelt there departed,

and after them the dwelling lay deserted.

It became a haunt for the wild beasts of the wastes:

so this one trots, and that one lopes.

to a north wind, that north wind brings it back.

nor has a rain-cloud slackened its downpour.

Do you question one who does not answer a question?

And can a worn, deserted ruin speak?

    forty full years of age?

and excellent is the substitute received in exchange!

    by Muhammad, the truthful messenger.

And when God saw among His creatures

error brought upon them by the misguided,

so they did not acknowledge God upon His earth,

nor proclaim His greatness or declare His oneness,

He selected a messenger from among His creatures,

so that workers from among them might sit before him.

    وَمَن غَيرُهُ المُحسِنُ المُجمِلُ

    And in His kindness He graciously did good;

and who but He is the gracious giver of good?

But they rejected their Lord's counsel,

and they neither approved it nor accepted it.

And he kept overcoming them to bring them to guidance,

while their cause was the basest and lowest.

So their Lord blessed a people through him,

and they came to have the most just judgment.

And the balance of others rises,

while their own weight is the greater, the heavier.

a Book of His, perfected and sent down.

with whom the Benefactor, the Bountiful, favored us.

So he prescribed prayer for us and almsgiving,

and kindness to kin, whose ties are maintained.

And he prescribed fasting for us and standing in prayer,

directed toward God—do not be ignorant—

for anyone for whom that is easy.

And enjoining what is right, and forbidding

    wrongdoing in everything one does.

I accepted that from his teaching,

and he never ceased to be just in his judgment.

    against whom our Lord plots.

And God granted us their wealth as spoils,

so we take them captive after we kill.

    Yet they think themselves steadfast

upon the truth, with no distraction turning them aside.

But they do not know, and they do not perceive

that Hell is being kindled for them.

And how many a chieftain of theirs in battle

was left in bitter cold, coughing!

    When night darkens around him,

Ja'ar, the limping hyena, visits him.

his loping wolves come to him.

And when his sun hovers above him,

    his hopping crows shade him.

And another of them, a companion of humiliation,

is brought down from the saddle by a charge,

enraged over his captivity [wording unclear],

as though a boil were upon his nose.
