At evening, heavy sorrows have returned to me,

huge as rocks, they have crushed my body.

If only the Resurrection had come at his death,

so that after him we would see neither wealth nor offspring.

And I grieve for nothing I have been bereft of

after the Messenger, now that he lies dead and is gone.

    وَفي العَفافِ فَلا تَعدِل بِهِ أَحَدا

    He was free of flaws, as they well knew;

and in chastity, set no one equal to him.

How much grief is mine after you, wearing me down,

when I remember that I shall never see you again.

My soul be your ransom, as a dead man and as a body—

how sweet your remembrance, your character, and your body!
