    And indeed my soul gained strength, grew tranquil, and believed

    in him today, through what befell the steed of Ibn Mudlij—

    Suraqa, as he sought to harm us with his scheming,

    on an Aʿwaji steed, compactly built like a cudgel.

    Then the Messenger of God said, "O my Lord, afflict him!

    For whatever dreadful plight You wish, You bring relief."

    Then it sank with him into the earth, until hidden

    were its hooves in the bed of a broad valley.

    وَلَولا دِفاعُ اللَهِ لَم يَتَعَرَّجِ

    So the Lord of the Throne afflicted him, keeping him from us, and turned him back;

    and but for God's protection, he would not have turned aside.
