1. تَوَلّى الجودُ وَاِنقَرَضَ الكِرامُ

    وَأَضحى المَجدُ لَيسَ لَهُ سَنامُ

    Generosity has departed, and the noble have perished.

    And glory now has no summit.

  2. فَلَيسَ يُلامُ إِمّا قالَ خَلقٌ

    عَلى الدُنيا وَساكِنِها السَلامُ

    So no one is to blame if someone says:

    Farewell to the world and its inhabitants.

  3. فَقَدتُم خَيرَ مَن رَكِبَ المَطايا

    سَقى جَدَثاً تَضَمَّنَهُ الغَمامُ

    You have lost the best of those who rode mounts;

    May the clouds water the grave that holds him.

  4. وَأَوحَشَتِ المَعالِمُ وَاِقشَعَرَّت

    لِفَقدَتِهِ وَأَلبَسَها قَتامُ

    And the landmarks grew desolate and shuddered

    At his loss, and dark dust cloaked them.

  5. بَكاهُ الدينُ وَالدُنيا جَميعاً

    وَبَكّى فَقدَهُ البَلَدُ الحَرامُ

    Religion and the world together wept for him,

    And the sacred city lamented his loss.

  6. بَكاهُ كُلُّ ذي عَينٍ إِلى أَن

    بَكاهُ في قَرامِصِهِ الحَمامُ

    Everyone with an eye wept for him, until

    Even the doves wept for him in their nesting hollows.

  7. مُنينا مِن فَجيعَتِهِ بِأَمرٍ

    يَشيبُ لَهُ الغُلامَةُ وَالغُلامُ

    Through the tragedy of his loss, we suffered an ordeal

    At which young girl and boy alike turn gray.

  8. أَتانا وَالأَنامُ عَلى ضَلالٍ

    فَجَدَّ إِلى هُداهُ بِهِ الأَنامُ

    He came to us while humankind was astray,

    So through him humankind strove toward his guidance.

  9. وَدينُ اللَهِ مَعزوزٌ أَثاماً

    فَعَزَّ الدينُ وَاِجتُنِبَ الأَثامُ

    And God's religion lay overpowered by sin;

    Then religion grew mighty, and sin was shunned.

  10. وَكانَ الدينُ مُنجَزِماً عُراهُ

    فَأَضحى الحَقُّ لَيسَ لَهُ اِنجِزامُ

    And religion's bonds had been severed,

    So truth no longer suffered any rupture.

  11. وَسُبلُ اللَهِ مُلبَسَةٌ ظَلاماً

    فَأَسفَرَ بِالنَبِيِّ لَهُ الظَلامُ

    And God's paths were clothed in darkness,

    Then, through the Prophet, its darkness gave way to light.

  12. فَشَدَّ لَنا مِنَ الإِسلامِ رُكناً

    وَثيقاً لا يَكونُ لَهُ اِهتِضامُ

    So he secured for us a pillar of Islam,

    Firm, never to be undermined.

  13. وَسَنَّ لَنا مِنَ الإِسلامَ نَهجاً

    صَلاةَ الخَمسِ يَتبَعُها الصِيامُ

    And he prescribed for us a path in Islam:

    The five prayers, followed by fasting.

  14. وَكَلَّفَ مَن أَطاقَ الحَجَّ قُرباً

    فَزادَ لَنا عَلى الحَجَرِ الزِحامُ

    And he enjoined pilgrimage on those able, as an act of devotion,

    So our crowding around the Stone increased.

  15. وَقالَ بِأَنَّهُ يَأتي شَفيعاً

    لِمَن قَد كانَ قُبلَتُهُ اِستِلامُ

    And he said that it would come as an intercessor

    For whoever had reverently touched it with a kiss.

  16. فَما زالَ النَبِيُّ بِنا مُقيماً

    فَطابَ لَنا لِعِشرَتِهِ المُقامُ

    And the Prophet continued to dwell among us,

    So living was sweet to us through his companionship.

  17. فَبَصَّرَنا وَأَسمَعَنا وَكُنّا

    قُبَيلُ كَأَنَّنا الإِبِلُ الهِيامُ

    So he made us see and hear, though we had been

    Only a little before, like wandering camels.

  18. نَرى أَنّا فَضَلنا الناسَ جَدّاً

    وَعُزَّ بِذلِكَ الهَمَجُ الطَغامُ

    We see that we have far surpassed other people,

    And thereby the lowly rabble were ennobled.

  19. فَساهَمَنا الزَمانُ عَلَيهِ كَرهاً

    فَغازَت لِلزَّمانِ بِهِ السِهامُ

    Then Time cast lots with us over him, against our will,

    So the lots won him for Time.

  20. وَحُمَّ لَهُ عَنِ الدُنيا اِنصِرافٌ

    وَكُلٌّ سَوفَ يَصرِفُهُ الحِمامُ

    And departure from the world was decreed for him,

    And death will carry everyone away.

  21. وَما مِن مُمهَلٍ في الأَرضِ إِلّا

    سَيَفجَأُ مَهلَهُ حَتفٌ زُؤامُ

    And no one granted respite on earth can escape

    A swift death that will suddenly overtake his reprieve.
