أضاءت لنا برقاً وأبطَا رَشاشها
Today, a cloud from you has cast its shade over us;
A cloud from you cast its shade over us today;
A cloud from you has cast a gloom upon us today,
It flashed lightning for us, but its drizzle was slow to fall.

فلاso neither غيمُهاits cloud cover يجلوclears away فيأيسُso despairs طامعٌa hopeful one
فلا غيمُها يجلو فيأيسُ طامعٌ
ولاnor غيثُهاits rain يأتيcomes فَيَروَىso is quenched عِطاشُهاits thirsty ones
ولا غيثُها يأتي فَيَروَى عِطاشُها
Its cloud neither clears, that the hopeful might despair,
So neither does its cloud cover lift to leave a hopeful one in despair,
Neither does its gloom clear up to disappoint the hopeful,
Nor does its rain come, that its thirsty ones might drink their fill.
Nor does its rain come to quench the thirst of its thirsty ones.
