الناسthe people فيat العيدEid قدindeed سُرُّواthey were delighted وقدand indeed فرحواthey rejoiced
الناس في العيد قد سُرُّوا وقد فرحوا
وماand not سُرِرتُI was delighted بهin it والواحدِby the One الصمدِthe Eternal Refuge
وما سُرِرتُ به والواحدِ الصمدِ
The people at Eid were delighted and rejoiced,
People rejoiced on Eid, full of joy,
but I took no joy in it—by the One, the Eternal Refuge.
But I was not made happy by that Unique One.
لماwhen تيّقنتُI became certain أنيthat I لاnot أعايِنُكمI behold you (plural)
لما تيّقنتُ أني لا أعايِنُكم
غمضتُI closed طرفيmy eyes فلمand so did not أنظرlook إِلىat أحدِanyone
غمضتُ طرفي فلم أنظر إِلى أحدِ
When I became certain that I would not behold you,
When I knew for certain that I cannot see you,
I closed my eyes and looked at no one.
I closed my eyes, and looked at no one.
