As though a watcher from you guards my thoughts,

and another watches over my gaze and my tongue.

So my eyes have never, since you, gazed upon a sight

of anyone but you without my saying, 'Both have seen me.'

Nor, without you, has a word escaped my mouth

about anyone else without my saying, 'Both have heard me.'

When those who pardon distract themselves from love

by drinking wine or listening to singing girls,

I have found that what consoles others makes me yearn

for nearness to you, until I tire of where I am.

Nor has a thought of mine stirred in secret

toward anyone but you without the two turning my reins aside.

And true brothers—I have grown weary of their talk,

and withheld my gaze and my tongue from them.

It was not asceticism that made me forget them, but that I

found you the one I behold in every place.
