رُبَّmany a وَرقاءَgray dove هتوفٍcalling loudly فيin الضُحىmidmorning
ذاتِpossessed of شَجوٍsorrow صَدَحتshe sang out فيupon فَنَنِa bough
Many a gray dove, calling in the forenoon,
Many a gray dove, calling loudly at midmorning,
Grief-laden, has sung out upon a bough.
Full of sorrow, sang upon a bough.
ذكرتshe remembered إِلفاًa beloved companion ودهراًand a time صالحاًhappy
فبكتso she wept حزناًin grief وهاجتand stirred حَزنيmy sorrow
She remembered a beloved companion and happier days,
She remembered a beloved companion and happy days,
And wept in sorrow, stirring up my sorrow.
So she wept in grief and stirred my sorrow.
فبكائيso my weeping ربماsometimes أرَّقَهاkept her awake
وبكاهاand her weeping ربماsometimes أرَّقَنيkept me awake
Perhaps my weeping kept her wakeful,
So my weeping sometimes kept her awake,
And perhaps her weeping kept me wakeful.
And her weeping sometimes kept me awake.
ولقدand indeed تشكوshe laments فماyet not أفهمهاI understand her
ولقدand indeed أشكوI lament فماyet not تفهمنيshe understands me
Indeed, she complains, but I do not understand her;
And indeed she laments, yet I do not understand her,
And indeed, I complain, but she does not understand me.
And indeed I lament, yet she does not understand me.
غيرexcept أنّيthat I بالجوىthrough love's anguish أعرِفُهاI know her
وهيand she أيضاًtoo بالجَوىthrough love's anguish تعرفُنيshe knows me
Yet through love’s anguish I know her,
Yet through love's anguish I know her,
And through love’s anguish she knows me as well.
And she too, through love's anguish, knows me.
