وكَذَّبتُ طَرفي فيك والطرفُ صادق

وكَذَّبتُ طَرفي فيك والطرفُ صادق

وأسمعت أُذني منك ما ليس تسمعُ

وأسمعت أُذني منك ما ليس تسمعُ

I disbelieved my own eyes concerning you, though the eye is truthful,

And I accused my gaze of lying about you, though my gaze was truthful.

And made my ear hear from you what it could not hear.

And I made my ear hear from you what it did not hear.

ولم أسكنِ الأرض التي تسكنونها

ولم أسكنِ الأرض التي تسكنونها

لئلا يقولوا إنني بِكَ مولعُ

لئلا يقولوا إنني بِكَ مولعُ

I did not dwell in the land where you all dwell,

And I did not dwell in the land that you inhabit,

Lest they say that I am passionately enamored of you.

Lest they say that I am infatuated with you.

فلا كبدي تهدأ ولا لك رحمةٌ

فلا كبدي تهدأ ولا لك رحمةٌ

ولا عنك إقصاء ولا فيك مطمعُ

ولا عنك إقصاء ولا فيك مطمعُ

And so my heart finds no calm, nor have you any mercy;

So my liver finds no calm, and you have no mercy.

I cannot keep away from you, yet can hope for nothing from you.

And there is no drawing away from you, nor any hope in you.
