O you who hold the pupil’s place within my eye,

and O you who hold the secret’s place within my mind,

O sum of all, whose entirety

is dearer to me than part of me and the rest of me.

Will you, I wonder, pity him whose heart

hangs in a bird’s two talons—

    love-distraught, bewildered, lonely,

fleeing from one wilderness to another?

He journeys by night and knows not, while his secrets

course like a flash of radiant lightning.

In the depths of the sea of thought, he is borne along

by subtleties from the power of the Powerful One.
