They accustomed me to union—and union is sweet;
They accustomed me to union, and union is sweet;
They accustomed me to affection and affection is sweet
then cast me into rejection—and rejection is hard.
And they struck me with rejection, and rejection is hard.
And they cast me with estrangement and estrangement is difficult

زعموا حين عاتبوا أن ذنبي

فرط حبي لهم وما ذاك ذنبُ
When they reproached me, they claimed that my sin
They claimed, when they reproached me, that my sin
They claimed when they reproached me that my sin
was loving them too deeply—but that is no sin.
Was my excessive love for them—and that is no sin.
Was my excessive love for them but that is no sin

No—by the beauty of surrender when lovers meet—
No—by the beauty of submission when we meet—
No, and the merit of deference when we meet
the only reward for one who loves is to be loved.
The only reward for one who loves is to be loved.
Is no recompense for one who loves except to be loved
