When shall I pass through the royal portico and be seen
When will I traverse the palace halls while
By the eye of a man deeply versed in glory's mysteries?
The eyes of a man seeking glory observe me?

When shall I see the moon of the chancery rising
When will I see the crescent moon of the council rising
With Bahram's might—rather, in Bahram's realm?
With fortune like Bahram's, nay, with Bahram's own kingdom?

When shall I kiss carpets that no supplicant can kiss
When will I kiss a carpet never kissed
And still tell dust from gold?
By one tranquil, who parts dust from poison?

Why do I spend the night in Shiraz, yet wake in
Why do I sleep in Shiraz and wake still
My home? May my wakefulness ransom my sleep and dreams!
In my house, though I would ransom my waking, my sleep, and my dreams?

What does the dream seek from my heart, tossing it about?
What my heart seeks, it tosses about;
I have sickness enough to satisfy it—my ailments.
I have enough sickness to serve its pains.

I have come to thank a night whose morrow I lament;
I've come to thank the night for bemoaning the day—
The night is my helper, and the days my creditors.
The night assists me, while the days show enmity.

And the earth knows that I shall traverse it
And the earth knows I will one day wipe it away
Until I see the one my imaginings see at night.
Until I see one who sees, by night, my fantasies.
