So if my fate has driven me back to you as hunted prey,

it is no wonder that Hajib should reclaim the bow.

It is the nest from which we flew, our plumage coming in,

and now we have returned to it, our plumage falling away.

May God requite the house of Saman on my behalf for what they did,

and in God, vengeance left unclaimed has a pursuer.

They married me to sorrow after I had divorced it,

and that is a wedding that brings mourning.

They made my crops thirst, so I watched for clouds—

foreign ones, when my kin failed me.

So they set upon my crops to reap them, and drained

waters whose channels were hands other than theirs.

Do your hands reap while others sow?

So you are locusts, while kings are clouds.

If the sultan covets what I have earned

through my poetry, then the sultan earns through poetry.

So it was you who praised the house of Buwayh, not I,

and saddlebags are more eloquent in praise than the tongue's words.
