ولقدand indeed بلوتI tested الأصدقاءthe friends فلمand did not
ولقد بلوت الأصدقاء فلم
أرsee فيهُمُamong them أوفىmore faithful منthan الوفرِwealth
أر فيهُمُ أوفى من الوفرِ
Indeed, I have tested friends, and have not
I have tested friends, yet found
Seen among them anyone more faithful than wealth.
None as faithful as riches' store;
وكذاكand likewise لمdid not أرsee فيamong العداenemies أحداًanyone
وكذاك لم أر في العدا أحداً
أنكىmore harmful لمنto whomever عادىhe opposed منthan الفقرpoverty
أنكى لمن عادى من الفقر
Likewise, among enemies I have seen no one
Nor have I seen amongst foes one
More harmful to those he opposes than poverty.
More distressful than poverty.
ذهبdeparted الغنىwealth وورثتand I inherited عادتهits habit
ذهب الغنى وورثت عادته
فأناso I الغنيُّthe rich one وغيريand someone other than me المثريthe wealthy one
فأنا الغنيُّ وغيري المثري
Wealth has departed, and I have inherited its ways;
Wealth departed and left its habit;
So I am rich, while others possess riches.
So I am the wealthy one now, and others destitute.
وتجمعتand came together فيin me اثنتانtwo things ولمand did not
وتجمعت في اثنتان ولم
يتجمَّعاthe two come together فيin سالفbygone الدهرtime
يتجمَّعا في سالف الدهر
And two things came together in me, though they had not
Two things have joined, which never
Come together in ages past.
United in ages gone before:
لاnot يبرحleaves المقصوصthe clipped bird موضعهits place
لا يبرح المقصوص موضعه
ولقدand indeed قصصتI was clipped فطرتthen I flew عنfrom وكريmy nest
ولقد قصصت فطرت عن وكري
The clipped bird does not leave its place;
Enduring poverty parts not
Yet indeed I was clipped, and flew away from my nest.
From its place, yet I've left my lair.
