How is it that I see the sons of al-ʿAbbās have opened
I am appalled that the Abbasids have paved
doors to honorific bynames and titles?
With epithets and titles, ill-conceived paths.

And they bestowed a title on a man whom, had their first been alive,
A man they titled, who had he lived before,
he would not have accepted as doorkeeper to the privy.
Would not for the rabble have opened gates.

Dirhams grew scarce in the palms of our caliph—
Few coins remain in our leader's fist,
this one—so he spent titles on the people.
Yet he doles out to nobles titles vast.
