and what goal it now seeks?

The hand of the days has caught a bird

too great for the hunter's snares to hold.

behold, the earth is happy with him.

    فلِم وسعت لجثَّته اللحودُ

    The earth had once been too narrow for him;

so why have the graves room for his body?

Yes: the soil touched a spacious heart,

so it infected the dust, and the earth grew wide.

I do not know whether to laugh or weep,

or whether death tears me down or builds me up.

An old friend—we have indeed lost him—

and a new bereavement we have found.

A calamity, though people see it as a blessing,

and a misfortune, though people see it as a festival.

People congratulate me on it, yet

    covenants and pledges console me.

And a sword with which I was struck time and again:

I have witnesses to its blows upon me.

When its edge was chipped, I kept weeping,

while I still had clotted blood from it.

And one of the wonders of the nights is that my adversary

perishes, yet my sorrow does not perish,

and half of my eye is tearless,

and half of my heart is ice.

When the tears of my eye pour over him,

his estrangement and rejection restrain them.

And I bear ugly traces of him,

among which iron caresses the head.

So half its tears are warm,

and half its tears are cold.

Who, then, has seen anyone among people like me:

I want, among my wishes, what I do not want?

And among death's bitter trials is losing a noble man

over whom my brothers, the witnesses, disagreed.

One congratulated me, saying, 'An enemy has gone,'

another consoled me, saying, 'A dear friend has gone.'

I have seen that reason helps when moderate,

but casts one into deadly perils when it increases.

    وإنَّ ثقلت فحاملها جهيدُ

    Like armor: if light, it protects;

if heavy, its bearer is exhausted.

I testify that an age in which I lived

and died, bound and alone, is a destroyer.

They said, 'The sea ebbs, then flows.'

So why have you ebbed, yet do not return?

ceased pouring tears at your ill treatment of me.

You made me weep both alive and dead,

so tell me: which of your two deeds was wise?

Here I am, both congratulated and consoled,

and here I am, both hating and loving,

and here I am, wretched through you yet happy.

though you are indeed a far-off thing.

And you are indeed the sharp sword,

and you are indeed sound knowledge,

and you are indeed the entire world,

but the world has no immortality.
