مردِّدٌalternating بينbetween إيوانa vaulted hall وديوانand a collection of poetry
مردِّدٌ بين إيوان وديوان
Comparing peoples and banners,
A gatherer of peoples and banners
Alternating between an iwan and a diwan,
Echoing between hall and divan
إذاwhen أتىcame to دارهhis house الأضيافthe guests أنشدَهُمhe recited poetry to them
إذا أتى داره الأضياف أنشدَهُم
وإخوتيand my brothers أسوةٌequal عنديin my eyes وإخوانيand my friends
وإخوتي أسوةٌ عندي وإخواني
When guests came to his house, he recited to them:
When guests come to his abode, he recites to them
“And my brothers and my friends are equal in my eyes.”
And my brothers are exemplars for me, and my comrades
