بسمت فأبدت جيدها فتكشّفت
عنto reveal نظمa string of درٍّpearls تحتbeneath نظمa string of لآليpearls
عن نظم درٍّ تحت نظم لآلي
She smiled and bared her neck, revealing
A string of pearls beneath a string of pearls.
وأرتكand she showed you خديهاher two cheeks ولاحand appeared عليهماupon them both
وأرتك خديها ولاح عليهما
صدغانtwo sidelocks ذوone possessing خالٍa beauty spot وآخرand another خاليwithout one
صدغان ذو خالٍ وآخر خالي
And she showed you her cheeks, and upon them appeared
Two sidelocks: one with a beauty spot, the other without.
فكأنso, as though ذاthis one ذالٍthe letter dhāl خلتwas devoid منof نقطةٍa dot
فكأن ذا ذالٍ خلت من نقطةٍ
وكأنّand as though ذاthis one دالٍthe letter dāl ونقطةand the dot of ذالthe letter dhāl
وكأنّ ذا دالٍ ونقطة ذال
So one seemed a dhāl stripped of its dot,
And the other a dāl with a dhāl’s dot.
