بحمدك لا بحمد الناس أضحي

بحمدك لا بحمد الناس أضحي

وكيلي ليس يكفيه وكيلُ

وكيلي ليس يكفيه وكيلُ

By praising you, not other people, I have come to this:

With Your praise, not the people's praise, I rise

My steward cannot make do with a single steward.

My trustee cannot suffice for me

وكانوا كلّما كالوا وزنا

وكانوا كلّما كالوا وزنا

فصرنا كلما وزنوا نكيلُ

فصرنا كلما وزنوا نكيلُ

And whenever they measured out, we weighed;

Whenever they weigh, they weigh little

now, whenever they weigh, we measure out.

While we, whenever weighing, weigh plenty

وزدت من العيال وذاك أنّي

وزدت من العيال وذاك أنّي

كتبت على لقائك من أعولُ

كتبت على لقائك من أعولُ

And I took on more dependents, because I

My dependents increased, that is because

listed those I support upon meeting you.

I planned for meeting You as their provider

وعشت وناقصٌ رزقي فأضحى

وعشت وناقصٌ رزقي فأضحى

مفاعلتن مفاعلتن فعولُ

مفاعلتن مفاعلتن فعولُ

And I lived with my livelihood scant; then it became

I lived in diminished provision, so it became

Mufāʿalatun, mufāʿalatun, faʿūl.

Mefa'ilun Mefa'ilun Fa'ul

وكنت أبيع من سقط القوافي

وكنت أبيع من سقط القوافي

وأحجر ما تضمنت الحمولُ

وأحجر ما تضمنت الحمولُ

And I used to sell some scraps of rhyme,

I used to sell the rhyming ends

and withhold what the laden beasts carried,

And collect what the camels carried

وأكتم من أبايع دِقَّ بَزّي

وأكتم من أبايع دِقَّ بَزّي

ففاض عليه نائلك الجزيلُ

ففاض عليه نائلك الجزيلُ

and hide my fine cloth from those I traded with;

I concealed from those I do business with my fine silk

then your abundant bounty overflowed upon it.

So Your abundant gifts overflowed upon it
