ولقد ذكرتك والنجوم كأنها
درٌpearls علىupon أرضground منof الفيروزجِturquoise
درٌ على أرض من الفيروزجِ
And indeed I remembered you, while the stars were like
I recalled you as the stars appeared
pearls upon a ground of turquoise.
Like pearls strewn on turquoise earth
يلمعنthey shine منthrough خللgaps السحابthe clouds كأنهاas though they were
يلمعن من خلل السحاب كأنها
شررٌsparks تطايرscattered فيin دخانsmoke العرفجthe arfaj shrub
شررٌ تطاير في دخان العرفج
They shone through gaps in the clouds, as though they were
Gleaming through the clouds as if they were
sparks flying in the smoke of the arfaj shrub.
Sparks flying up from aloesmoke
والأفقand the horizon أهلكmore desolate منthan خواطرthoughts كاسبٍsomeone earning a living
والأفق أهلك من خواطر كاسبٍ
بالشعرthrough poetry يستجديbegs from اللئامthe ignoble ويرتجيand hopes
بالشعر يستجدي اللئام ويرتجي
And the horizon was more desolate than the thoughts of someone earning a living
The horizon robbed a poetry merchant
through poetry, begging the ignoble and hoping.
Of his thoughts, begging, hoping for crumbs
فمزجتso I mingled دمعيmy tears بالدماءwith blood ولمand not أكنI was
فمزجت دمعي بالدماء ولم أكن
صِرفَpure in الهوىlove والعهدand fidelity إنif لمnot أمزِجِI mingle
صِرفَ الهوى والعهد إن لم أمزِجِ
So I mingled my tears with blood, and I would not be
So I mixed my tears with blood, though I hadn't
pure in love and fidelity if I did not mingle them.
