لَمّاwhen تَبَدّىappeared الكُوفيُّthe Kufan يُنْشِدُناreciting to us
لَمّا تَبَدّى الكُوفيُّ يُنْشِدُنا
قُلْناwe said لَهُto him طَعْنَةًa stab وطاعوناand a plague
قُلْنا لَهُ طَعْنَةً وطاعونا
When the Kufan appeared, reciting to us,
When the fool from Kufa recited to us
We said to him: “A stab and a plague upon you!”
We said to him "Plague and pestilence!"
تَجْمَعُyou combine ياO أَحْمَقَmost foolish العِبادِof humankind لَناfor us
تَجْمَعُ يا أَحْمَقَ العِبادِ لَنا
شِعْرَكَyour verse فيin بَرْدِهِits coldness وكانوناand Kanun (a winter month)
شِعْرَكَ في بَرْدِهِ وكانونا
You bring together for us, O most foolish of men,
"Gather, O idiot, for us
Your chilly verse and Kanun.
Your poetry in its frigidity and winter"
