The heart has overflowed with sorrows; so if

you make the rounds with a cup, bring it brimming over,

in the darkness of a night whose stars are seen,

while all of them incline toward the west.

We see you forgetting the joy of your day in

Sa'id's monastery and its spacious shade,

    upon a carpet of violets—already

a spread of roses had been laid over it—

and with a cup of wine passed round by a moon

    whose glances wound our hearts.

In days gone by he used to hint at

union, but I see he has spoken plainly.
