He gambled his soul in love for a moon,

And won union with full moons through purses of money.

And deflowered his revelry's virgins, yearning

For evenings of wine and early mornings.

No day is like this day, brought forth for us

By its gardens in bright, patterned brocades.

A day when time's dark steed prances, thanks to

Its beauty, with white stockings and forehead blazes.

A joy whose measure contains no shriveled dates,

And pleasure whose clarity is free of murk.

The tent of clouds has been pitched for us,

And the breeze's army sprinkled with rain.

And we have two maidens: one red as the sun,

And another yellow as the moon.

Both virgins: this one is faulted for her old age,

Plain to see, and this one is faulted for her youth.

A wine so ancient that it is as though

Its presser were Adam, father of humankind.

And a secluded maiden whose form shows you

The full moon of night in her fragrant robe.

She sang plaintively over her lute, having drawn

Our wine, an ember without sparks.

Serving-maids bring it round to us, garlanded

In wanton play with necklaces of flowers.

They were adorned with two earrings as they brought it to us,

    With scorpion-curled temple-locks and forelocks.

O you who forsake your day's delight for tomorrow,

You sell joy itself for its trace.

If worries have wronged your heart, there is nothing

Like avenging yourself with flute and string.

And a fawn whose glances bewildered

The gazelle's gaze with their brilliant whites and dark pupils.

    فَإِنْ جَفاني احْتَجَجْتُ بِالقَدَرِ

    I was compelled to love him, so I might excuse him;

So if he shuns me, I plead predestination.

I asked him for a visit, and he generously granted it,

And all this through the tongues of glances.

So I attained my desire in sipping his saliva,

And my wish in other pleasures.
