لَوْif أَشْرَقَتْshone لَكَfor you شَمْسُthe sun ذاكَthat الهَوْدَجِthe howdah
لأَرَتْكَit would show you سَالِفَتَيْboth sides of the neck غَزالٍa gazelle أَدْعَجِdark-eyed
If the sun of that howdah shone for you,
it would show you both sides of a dark-eyed gazelle's neck.
أَرْعَىI watch النُّجومَthe stars كَأَنَّهاas though they فيin أُفْقِهاtheir horizon
I watch the stars, as though, on their horizon,
they were daisy blossoms in gardens of violets.

And Jupiter amid the sky—you would take it,
with its radiance like quivering quicksilver,
مِسْمارa pin تِبْرٍraw gold أَصْفَرٍyellow رَكَّبتَهyou have set it

for a pin of yellow gold you have set
in the turquoise stone of a silver ring.
وتَمايُلُand the swaying الجَوْزاءِOrion يَحْكيimitates فيin الدُّجَىthe darkness
مَيَلانَthe swaying شَارِبِa drinker قَهْوَةٍwine لَمْnot تُمْزَجِbe mixed
And Orion's swaying mimics, in the darkness,
the sway of a drinker of unmixed wine.
وَتَنَقَّبَتْand she veiled her face بِخَفيفِwith a thin غَيْمٍcloud أَبْيَضٍwhite

And she has veiled her face with a thin white cloud;
within it, she is between modest reserve and self-display,
كَتَنَفُّسِlike the breathing الحَسْناءِthe beautiful woman فيupon المِرْآَةِthe mirror إِذْwhen

like a beauty's breath upon a mirror, when
her charms have reached perfection, and she is still unwed.
