وجاهِلٍand one ignorant بِالغَرامِof passion قُلْتُI said لَهُto him
إِذْwhen قالَhe said ماwhat الهَوىlove وماand what فِتَنُهُits trials
And to one ignorant of passion I said,
when he asked, “What is love, and what are its trials?”
إِنْif كُنْتَyou are تَهْوىyou desire المَماتَdeath فاصْبُthen become lovesick هَوىًlove
فَالصَّبُfor the lovesick one مَيْتٌdead قَميصُهُhis shirt كَفَنُهُhis shroud
“If you desire death, then fall in love;
for the lovesick one is dead: his shirt is his shroud.”
