And the rose of Qahabiyya's garden—

beauty arrayed it in two hues.

    بَاطِنُها مِنْ ذَهَبٍ عَيْنِ

    Its outside is of a ruby's rind;

its inside is of pure gold.

I kissed it out of love for it, for with it

the full moon greeted me beside a spring.

It was like my cheek against his cheek

the day we met, on the morning of parting.

And a fortress whose lower reaches Capella embraced,

while its heights rose beyond Orion's belt.

It knows no rain, for the clouds serve it

as ground whose two edges its herds tread.

Whenever a cloud appears, the fortress's dweller wades

through its pools before its spouts pour forth.

Its watchtower would be counted among the stars of the spheres

if it moved along their courses.

On the peaks of a lofty, rugged mountain, it brims

with pride in the mountain, which brims with vainglory in it.

It has steep passes; the eagles of the sky hover

beneath them, concealed in their hidden folds.

Its stratagems repelled the stratagems of kings,

and its formidable schemes made theirs fall short.

It let your lofty resolve tread its crown

when you made long spears into steps for climbing it.

And it compared no creature in creation with you, when

it saw death's bows in the palm of their carver.
