وإِنْand if بَدَتْappeared السُّتُورُthe curtains لَناto us رَأَيْناwe saw
بُزَاةًhawks قَدْalready قُرِنَّthey were paired بِطَيْرِwith birds ماءِof water
And if the curtains come into view before us, we see
Though we unveil the veils we yet will find
Hawks that have been paired with waterfowl,
A dove with waterfowl in peace entwined
وأُسْداًand lions فيin مَرابِضِهاtheir lairs ظِباءٌgazelles
تُقابِلُهاface them علىin حَالِa state اسْتِواءِof equality
And lions, with gazelles in their lairs,
And lions in their dens with deer abide
Facing them on equal terms.
As equals, free of rage and tyranny
فَلاso not هَذاthis one يُرَاعُis frightened لِذاof that one وَلاnor ذاthat one
يُرَوِّعُterrifies ذاthis one بِجَوْرٍwith injustice وَاعْتِداءِand aggression
So this one is not frightened of that one, nor does that one
Not this one preys on that, nor that takes fright
Terrify this one with injustice and aggression.
Of this one's wrong and boastful tyranny
كَأَنَّas though الدّارَthe house مَكَّةُMecca وهيand it أَمْنٌsafety
لِتِلْكَfor those الوَحْشِwild beasts منfrom سَفْكِthe shedding of الدِّماءِblood
As though the house were Mecca, a place of safety
As though the land's Mecca, and peace prevails
For those wild beasts from bloodshed.
For beasts of blood and savage cruelty
