And I have been made so thin that, were I in one scale-pan,

And my shadow in the other, I would not outweigh my shadow.

When she appears, you say, “The sun in the forenoon!”

And if she gazes, you say, “The gazelle amid the sands!”

Traits the eye beholds, until they seem

The first stirrings of drowsiness sprinkled into wide eyes.

And life's trials have refined him; only

With polishing does the sword's watered pattern appear.

Likewise, the full moon resembles the crescent; and always

A likeness to the cub is seen in the mighty lion.

Blessed is He who brought you forth, a full moon without darkness,

And a lion cub without a thicket, and rain without mud.
