And a wine saffron-like in color and fragrance,

a fine wine, clad in dusky cloaks,

it lay in the tavern of ʿUmr al-Zaʿfarān through

the passing of scorching noons and downpours there.

Nor are the young nobles, if they drink

wine, more radiant than its gray-haired monks.

I drank it from the hands of a dark-eyed woman, whose eye

consumes hearts by keeping them far and drawing them close.

A sun: when she rises, her charms say,

"Behold, I have risen—so, O sun of midmorning, vanish!"

    فَلا تَسَلْ عَنْ عِناقِ الظَّبْي والذِّيبِ

    And I slept drunk, and she slept embracing me;

so do not ask about the embrace of the gazelle and the wolf.
